80 works of art by 8 artistes including the internationally renowned Vipta Kapadia and Gunjan Cowlagi, the revivalist pioneer of ‘Vitrefusion’ art form Veenu Shah, and two gorgeous actors….a lovely evening.
Actors Simran Kaur and Sunny Gill were pleasantly surprised at the collection on display.

As conventional definitions of art continue to be defied; its no longer oil on canvas or acrylic on canvas that engages the mind. Newer mediums; methods processes are all over the place and Gunjan Cowlagi is at the forefront of all the action. She has exhibited across the world; refined her craft and presents a reinvented form of art called ‘vitrefusion’- molten glass on copper and steel; which is then worked upon with acrylic. Time consuming; but breathtaking!
She says, “this technique was prevalent in the Mohenjodaro and Harappa civilization but was used in jewellery.”

Bringing this technique to art was a challenge taken up by these 8 artistes. Gunjan Cowlagi, who has organized the show, wears another hat as a successful jewellery designer and was inspired to bring this technique to art. A unique twist to vitrefusion has been given by Kana Lomror, a young trained fine artiste who has experimented with a new technique that combines the metal on canvas to create dimension. He also has shown further experimentations on 3D art forms.

Art gallery owner Gautam Patole admired the paintings and discussed the subtle differences between enamelling and vitrefusion and Devyani Parekh admired the works as well.
CA Triveni Mahajan, veteran artiste Veenu Shah, Jyotsna Singh, a trained potter, Ritu Sangal and Anindita Kishore were the other artistes who displayed their work at the show.

Fine coloured glass powder is fused on metal by firing it in the kiln at high temperatures. To make an artwork,one needs to layer it repeatedly and re-fire it.These pieces are unique,as it is difficult to make identical pieces.

In Vitrefusion exhibition eight artists come from different fields have expressed themselves in vitreous enamel in very different ways and put all the effort together to put up this medium on the map of contemporary art field.

Veenu Shah, one of the pioneers of this medium in India, has travelled throughout the world and is bringing out the new possibilities of the medium to use it into mobile and 3D sculptural art forms. It is a very inspiring step for all the upcoming enamellers.

Being an artist Vipta Kapadia has explored the possibilities of the medium on panels mostly in black & white and various rich effects of fluxes on 3d copper surfaces.

Jyotsna Singh, a trained potter, is fascinated by textures and formed 3D copper surface where she plays with variety of fluxes and few sophisticated transparent color shades.

Practiced with many mediums and techniques in art Ritu Sangal has used vitreous enamel more effectively in her work. Mostly the spiritual subjects are nicely depicted in cloisonné and painter’s techniques.

Anindita Kishore, with civil service background, is very much fascinated with vitreous enamel and has given a new direction to her creative expression. She uses this medium in more experimental way than a conventional painter. Gunjan Cowlagi, basically is a jewellery designer and an artist who paints on canvas. She is inspired by the experimental qualities of vitreous enamel on 3D art forms. and She has crossed the boundaries of 2D flat surfaces and explored 3D wall and sculptural forms.

Triveni Mahajan is a trained chartered accountant and jewellery designer by profession and is fascinated by jewel like qualities of the vitreous enamels surface and endless possibilities of exploration. She explored the richness of various techniques of enameling in her own way. Kana Lomror, a trained fine artist, has taken the vitreous enamel into new direction where he combines the two mediums together on canvas that create dimension. He also has shown further experimentations on 3D art forms.

In its 10th glorious year, the Vodafone Crossword awards went to Anjali Joseph (who could not make it) and Omair Ahmed in the fiction category and Ashwin Sanghi for Chanakyas Chant in the popular category.The other winners were V.S. Ramachandran for “The Tell Tale Brain” for Indian Non-Fiction, Ranjit Lal for “Faces in the Water” for Children’s Writing and N. S. Madhavan & Rajesh Rajmohan for “Litanies of Dutch Battery for the Indian language Translation category.

The Chief Guest Mrinal Pandey; (Padmashri awardee) dressed simply in a cream and red saree; lamented the rapidly shrinking vocabulary of the present generation, She observed candidly that literature mutates and evolves with time.In a country fortunate to be blessed with many regional languages, we all sadly become monolingual by the time we are 30. Its a case of “tongues disappearing within the mouth”, she added. Dolly Thakore, Anil Dharker and R Sriram, the Inceptor to the Vodafone Crossword Awards were all present as Lilette Dubey emceed the proceedings.

There was also a tabla performance by child prodigy Keshava who had also performed at the Commonwealth Games. Also in the distinguished audience were bestselling authors Rashmi Bansal, Amish Tripathi, Radhakrishnan Pillai, Capt Gopinath, Ishrat Syed and Radhakrishnan Pillai.

R Sriram, Inceptor, Vodafone Crossword Book Awards summed up beautifully when he said that good literature symbolizes freedom of spirit. It stays with you in your deepest and darkest moments and opens up an idea or a thought process. It makes us better human beings and illuminates our lives.

LONDON, Aug. 20, 2011 — The winner of the IBC2011 International Honour for Excellence is Sir David Attenborough, in recognition of his remarkable career in television and, in particular, natural history. His career spans almost 60 years, with his Atlantic Productions documentary Flying Monsters 3D with Sir David Attenborough one of the most acclaimed programmes commissioned by Sky 3D.

The International Honour for Excellence is the highest award which IBC bestows. It is presented to individuals and organisations which have taken the best technology available – and driven technology forward – to create the finest broadcasting content.

Sir David Attenborough joined the BBC in 1952 and immediately found his vocation in natural history programming. He made his name in front of the camera, as well as producing, with the Zoo Quest expeditions, in which he and a small crew set off with a 16mm camera to a remote corner of the globe, intending to return with a rare animal for London Zoo and sufficient footage to create a television series.

In the mid 1960s Sir David temporarily pulled back from making programmes when he was appointed the controller of the newly launched channel BBC2. Among the programmes he commissioned was Monty Python’s Flying Circus – about as far from natural history as it is possible to imagine. But the natural world was too big a draw and he returned to finding new ways of presenting its wonders on television. The 1979 landmark series Life on Earth and its sequence with mountain gorillas became one of the most watched programmes of all time.

“Sir David Attenborough has been called ‘the greatest broadcaster of our time’, and throughout his career he has seized upon the latest developments in technology to illuminate natural history,” said Peter Owen, chairman of the IBC Council. “Working with the BBC Natural History Unit he pioneered time-lapse sequences in The Private Life of Plants and low-light and infrared cameras to capture the behaviour of nocturnal mammals. Today he is working with Atlantic Productions on stunning 3D programmes, including Flying Monsters, the first 3D programme to win a BAFTA Award.”

Sir David said “I am greatly honoured to receive this award from IBC. Throughout my career I have used the best technology available. When I started this was 16mm film, which gave us lightweight cameras to take into the wild. Since then my journey has taken me from black and white to colour and from film to digital high definition, and today I am excited to be involved in 3D production, which really immerses the viewer in the scene.

“I have worked with the best people in the business, including the BBC Natural History Unit and now Atlantic Productions, and some extraordinarily patient and skilled cameramen and directors. Making wildlife television – whether it was Zoo Quest in the 1950s or Flying Monsters today – is hugely collaborative. I know that IBC encourages and develops collaborations between programme makers and technologists, which makes this award particularly special. Thank you, IBC.”

The IBC Awards Ceremony, which will include a special tribute to Sir David Attenborough and a look at the latest stereoscopic 3D wildlife programmes presented by Atlantic Productions, is on Sunday 11 September. All visitors are invited to attend the ceremony, in the RAI Auditorium, which starts at 18:30 with doors opening at 18:15.
