New York State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg was the honoree of South Nassau Communities Hospital’s 26th Annual Golf Tournament held recently at The Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor and Middle Bay Country Club in Oceanside. The annual tournament also raised more than $277,000 in support of the hospital’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics and Long Island Joint Replacement Institute (LIJRI).

“Assemblyman Weisenberg has been a loyal and steadfast advocate of South Nassau Communities Hospital and the communities and residents of the South Shore of Nassau County,” said South Nassau’s president and CEO, Joseph A. Quagliata. “On behalf of our board of directors, employees, physicians and the patients we serve and their families and neighbors, I thank him for his ardent efforts in support of the mission of South Nassau to provide standard-setting healthcare services.”

The annual tournament’s 240 golfers competed for low gross score, closest to the pin, longest drive, most accurate drive, and hole-in-one prizes. The afternoon of golf was followed by an evening of fine dining, camaraderie and fun, including a lavish buffet and live auction; raffle prizes ranging from tickets to professional sporting events to foursomes at the area’s most prestigious courses; and golf clubs and accessories by Nike Golf. The annual tournament’s top sponsors were Barlett, McDonough, Bastone & Monaghan, LLP; Eclipsys; Island Emergency Medical Services, PC; Optimum Lightpath; Caduceus, Inc.; Pathway Systems Design; Signature Bank; and South Shore Radiation Oncology. Paul Conte Cadillac and Wantagh Mazda were the hole-in-one sponsors.

“I offer a special thanks to our hole-in-one and top sponsors,” said Elizabeth Nardone, vice president of development, “as well as all the tournament’s generous sponsors, participants and volunteers who continue to support South Nassau year after year.”

Assemblyman Weisenberg has been a tireless champion of South Nassau, securing funding to support patient education programs that improve birth outcomes for low-income women, as well as funding for major capital improvements, including expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department, and, most recently, for the creation of the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health. Throughout his legislative career, Assemblyman Weisenberg has been a staunch backer for people with disabilities.

He spearheaded the development of Angela’s House and Angela’s House II – the only facilities on Long Island to care for medically fragile children – and led the effort to build a respite suite at Stony Brook Hospital’s Childhood Cancer Center for family members of children with cancer. He has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards for his dedication to enhancing the quality of life of those with physical and mental challenges. Among the organizations that have recognized his work in this area are the Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York State, the American Heart Association, and the Association for Children with Down Syndrome.

Most recently, he was named Honorary Chair of the Friedberg Jewish Community Center’s Sunrise Day Camp, the first and only day camp in New York State for children who are being treated for cancer and cancer-related disorders. His work to improve care delivery and services for those with disabilities continues. He co-sponsored legislation to preserve Timothy’s Law, a mental health parity bill, has sponsored numerous bills to address alcoholism and substance abuse, and currently sponsors a measure to create a New York State Autism council.

Orthopedists at South Nassau’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics and LIJRI are using minimally invasive and image-guided surgical technology to perform joint replacement surgery and repair common and serious musculoskeletal injuries. Musculoskeletal injuries repaired at the Center include knee cartilage and ligaments tears; shoulder instability, impingement, recurrent dislocations and rotator cuff or labrum tears; foot and ankle and hand and upper extremity injuries.

In addition to total knee and hip replacement surgery, LIJRI surgeons perform custom-fitted total joint replacements and robotic knee replacement surgery as well as partial joint replacement techniques, including Birmingham Hip™ resurfacing and the Uni-Knee™ partial knee replacement. Orthopedic spine surgeons use a range of surgical approaches to fix painful lower back problems. These approaches include lumbar disc replacement, kyphoplasty, X STOP, and satellite surgery. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 1-877-SOUTH-NASSAU.

South Nassau Communities Hospital is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 435 beds, more than 875 physicians and 2,800 employees. Located in Oceanside, NY, the hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, oncologic, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. In addition to its extensive outpatient specialty centers, South Nassau provides emergency and elective angioplasty and is the only hospital on Long Island with the Novalis Tx™ and Gamma Knife® radiosurgery technologies. South Nassau is a designated Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health and Comprehensive Community Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons and is recognized as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

The 2010 SIBSPlace (Survivorship in Brothers and Sisters) Annual Auction raised $270,000 in support of the program. An essential community service of South Nassau Communities Hospital, SIBSPlace is celebrating its 10th year of free service to families throughout Nassau County.

The Annual Auction also honored and recognized the generosity and devoted efforts of SIBSPlace founder and South Nassau Communities Hospital board member Mr. Michael Schamroth and his family; Mr. and Mrs. Norman Basner; Mr. and Mrs. James Daly; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Janow; Mr. and Mrs. Al Perkell; The Laura Rosenberg Foundation, and The Wegman Family.

“Since its founding 10 years ago, SIBSPlace has exceeded its mission of extending a loving and caring hand that helps families and children cope with the overwhelming stress and turmoil that results when a loved one is seriously ill,” said Joseph A. Quagliata, president and CEO of South Nassau. “Our guests of honor are a reflection of the teamwork that inspires South Nassau to fulfill its mission. They are loyal and dear friends who generously give of their time, talents and treasure, and we are deeply grateful that they are on our team.”

The goal of SIBSPlace is to help children cope with feelings and needs due to a sibling or parent suffering with cancer or other type of devastating illness. The only program of its kind in the United States, it is available to all children ages 5-17. SIBSPlace provides a comprehensive program of support and guided recreation in which personal needs, unexpressed feelings and confusing experiences can be addressed by the well siblings. A typical visit includes play, arts and crafts, psychoeducational group interaction, mentoring and tutoring. Other special activities include animal therapy and field trips to local attractions.

“I thank the auction’s volunteer committee for working diligently and devoting immeasurable time and energy to the success of the evening,” said Elizabeth Nardone, vice president of development at South Nassau. “We are also thankful to our sponsors and to every person who bid generously throughout the evening. Their generosity and benevolence is vital to ensuring the continued longevity of SIBSPlace.”

The Annual Auction committee is spearheaded by a group of concerned community members headed by Mr. Schamroth. The co-chairs of the event were Shari and Lowell Frey, a member of the hospital’s board of directors, and Heidi and Jason Goldenberg.

Santa Barbara, California – A free online class on How to Avoid Phishing and Identity Theft Scams will be offered this summer at KSURF’s Virtual University. The course presents a detailed look at the latest schemes and techniques used by cyber criminals to carry out phishing attacks and identity theft. Phishing is a common method of illegally obtaining passwords, credit card numbers, and other personal information using forged e-mails and fake web sites.

The free course will examine how individuals can protect themselves against cyber crime as they surf the Web, read e-mail, and interact with friends on social networks such as Facebook. It will also provide helpful guidelines on what victims of phishing and identity theft can do to fight back.

Last week, Jim Breyer’s Facebook account was reportedly hijacked by fraudsters. Ironically, Breyer is on Facebook’s board of directors. More than 2,000 of his “friends” received an email inviting them to apply for a “Facebook phone number.” Those who responded were unaware that the invitation was a phishing scheme and handed over their passwords and other personal information to cyber thieves.

In Des Moines, Iowa, George Lawrence told police he received a text message stating that his debit card had been deactivated and he needed to call and reactivate it. He called the number he was given and punched in his card number and the expiration date as instructed. A few days later, he discovered that a crook in Dublin, Ireland, had withdrawn $200.00 from his account minutes after he “reactivated” his card. The thief checked the account balance a minute later and withdrew another $200.

Two days ago, the IRS warned of a new rash of phishing scams in which taxpayers receive fake e-mails claiming that they owe additional taxes and directing recipients to a website where they are asked to enter a credit card number to pay the amount due. Many taxpayers unwittingly walk into the trap and sometimes loose thousands of dollars. Organized criminal gangs in Romania are thought to be responsible for many of these IRS phishing attacks.

According to veteran web developer and author Richard De A’Morelli, who created the free course for KSURF, most cases of online fraud and identity theft start with a bad decision by Internet users who don’t understand how these scams work.

“People need to learn to think before they act, and never to give out passwords or credit card numbers just because an e-mail tells them to do it,” De A’Morelli said. “No matter how many laws are passed, it all comes down to users educating themselves and making smart choices in their online behavior.”

A “phished” e-mail will usually contain the familiar logo of a major bank or government agency and an official-sounding message urging the recipient to take some action. Using a technique known as “social engineering,” unsuspecting individuals are duped into visiting a fake website where they willingly provide passwords and credit card numbers to fraudsters.

Last year, more than 300,000 complaints were filed with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Many of these reports involved online fraud or identity theft. Losses in 2009 totaled $560 million, more than double the $264 million reported a year ago, an ominous sign that cybercrime is escalating.

The dangers lurking on the Internet are much more serious than just having to deal with the annoyance of a fraudulent charge on a credit card statement. Once cyber crooks obtain a victim’s password and credit card number, they can use that information to apply for new credit cards, obtain loans, rent a home, file insurance claims, even obtain a driver’s license and file fake tax returns in the victim’s name.

Identity theft can have devastating consequences and it may take victims years and thousands of dollars to undo the damage done by one careless mistake,” De A’Morelli explained. “An ounce of common sense goes a long way on the Internet.”

KSURF’s free course will give participants an in-depth understanding of how phishing attacks work and why they work so well, as well as insights into various other online scams that can lead to identity theft. The course will also explain how to “surf safely” on social networking sites such as Facebook and explore new technologies being developed by banks and law enforcement agencies to fight cybercrime.

For unlucky victims of phishing and identity theft, the course will outline the steps that should be taken to notify banks and credit reporting agencies, how to file a complaint with the appropriate law enforcement agency, and how to work through the often complicated process of having fraudulent charges and other negative information removed from their credit history.

The KSURF course is designed for novice users but is also appropriate for experienced users and those in the corporate workplace. The course should take 3-5 weeks to complete, and participants can study at their own pace from the comfort of their home or office.

The class begins June 1 and enrollments will be accepted through June 30. To register for the free course, and for information about many other online courses offered at KSURF, go to http://vu.ksurf.net/calendar.html

About KSURF – Where Knowledge Surfers Learn™

More than 900 food and wine enthusiasts feasted on the finest foods, desserts, pastries and wines served in the Long Island/New York metro area at the 17th Annual “Evening of Good Taste” culinary extravaganza. Held at the Crest Hollow Country Club, the event raised more than $125,000 in support of South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics.

“The primary ingredients for the success of the evening are the enduring support of South Nassau’s administration, sponsors, my culinary arts colleagues and the selfless efforts of the members of the event planning committee” said Stephen Bello, C.E.C., C.C.A., A.A.C., South Nassau’s award-winning executive chef, who is the founder of the event. “Evening of Good Taste fulfilled its mission of showcasing the region’s culinary artists while supporting the growth of South Nassau’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics as well as protecting the health and wellness of the environment.”

“Evening of Good Taste” showcases the very best foods, desserts and wines in the region and serves as an official competition to determine the top culinary artists and vintners on Long Island and the New York metro area as judged by a team of certified executive chefs from the tri-state region. The competition has divisions for schools, restaurants, vintners, bakeries and ice sculptors and awards are given for appetizers, entrées, desserts, overall table presentation, bread, pastries, decorated cakes, wine display and vendor display.

The results of the competition are as follows: People’s Choice Award – Sodexo; Restaurant Division – Appetizer: Butterfields (Hawaiian Sea Bass); Entrée: Team Long Island (Short Ribs); Dessert: Watermill Caterers (Indian Pistachio Delight); Overall Table Presentation: Watermill Caterers; ACF Gold Medal Restaurant: Team Long Island; Ice Carving – Ice Fantasies; Bakery – Bread: Spiga (Stuffed Bread); Pastry: Michelle Makes Cakes (Red Velvet Cupcake); Decorated Cakes: Marney Cakes (Wedding Cakes); Best Wine Display – Martha Clara; Best Vendor Display – Boar’s Head; Student Division – Appetizer: Joseph M. Barry Career & Educational Center (Duck Confit); Entrée: Eastern Suffolk BOCES (Beef Tenderloin); Dessert: Joseph M. Career & Education Center (Soups & Sandwich).

This year’s “Evening of Good Taste” benefited South Nassau’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics. Orthopedists at South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics and its Long Island Joint Replacement Institute™ are using minimally invasive and image-guided surgical technology to perform joint replacement surgery and repair common and serious musculoskeletal injuries. Musculoskeletal injuries repaired at the Center include knee cartilage and ligaments tears; shoulder instability, impingement, recurrent dislocations and rotator cuff or labrum tears; foot and ankle and hand and upper extremity injuries.

In addition to total knee and hip replacement surgery, LIJRI surgeons perform custom-fitted total joint replacements and partial joint replacement techniques, including Birmingham Hip™ resurfacing and the Uni-Knee™ partial knee replacement. Orthopedic spine surgeons use a range of surgical approaches to fix painful lower back problems. These approaches include lumbar disc replacement, kyphoplasty, X STOP, and satellite surgery.

For more information about South Nassau’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics and its Long Island Joint Replacement Institute or to schedule an appointment, please call 1-877-SOUTH-NASSAU.

In appreciation of his efforts to improve the lives of others, and for his years of dedicated service to the community, South Nassau Communities Hospital has named Assembly Member Harvey Weisenberg as the honoree of the hospital’s 26th Annual Golf Outing to be held Thursday, June 24, at The Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor and Middle Bay Country Club in Oceanside. Proceeds raised by the outing will support South Nassau’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics and Long Island Joint Replacement Institute™ (LIJRI).

“Throughout his legislative career as an assemblyman and Long Beach City president and councilman, Assemblyman Weisenberg has been a loyal supporter of South Nassau Communities Hospital’s mission and a steadfast advocate for the communities and residents we serve,” said the hospital’s president and CEO, Joseph A. Quagliata. “He is also revered for his enduring commitment to meeting the needs of those with physical and mental disabilities.”

The outing’s golfers will compete for low gross score, low net score, nearest to the pin, longest drive, most accurate drive, and hole-in-one prizes. The afternoon of golf will be followed by an evening of fine dining, camaraderie, and fun, including a lavish buffet; raffle prizes ranging from tickets to professional sporting events to foursomes at the area’s most prestigious courses; and golf clubs and accessories by Nike, TaylorMade, and Callaway. For more information or to register, call (516) 377-5360.

Concord Calif., April 17, 2010 – Inventrak, a retail management solution company for micro to midsize retailers, today announced that they have changed their business name to Retail Cloud. The new name speaks to the company’s focus on providing a broader scope of cloud computing technology to small and midsize retailers, with on demand information, and the tools to help a business grow within the retail cloud. Features once only available to large retailers, can now be utilized by small businesses to build a customer centric sales operation, with cross channel integration that can be used to save or increase sales at the point of purchase. This announcement coincides with two industry leading trade shows taking place in Las Vegas this week; Electronic Transactions Association’s Annual Meeting and Expo, the premier event of the payments industry and SPREE: The Specialty Retail Entrepreneur Expo & Conference, the specialty retail industry’s largest annual event.

Retail Cloud drives systems and solutions to enable retailers to achieve MSIB, which is our acronym for More Stuff in the Bag (the ultimate goal of all retailers). We accomplish this through providing solutions that create transparency into the operation for business managers, provides relevant information to optimize the customer experience, and helps manage the customer relationship. Founder of Retail Cloud, Kevin Colaco states, “As retailers move toward a 360-degree view of each customer, and utilize relevant customer data obtained in one channel to improve customer service and increase sales in another channel, we are allowing the retailer to gain the ability to maximize margins on each individual transaction.”

Our system includes Inventrak an inventory management system for single to multi stores to warehouse venues, which is an effective retail management system able to tie inventory trends with customer spending. Customer Experience Optimization, also known as CEO, which has the capability to help increase customer satisfaction, customer retention, and the increasing of customer spending. Small to Midsize retailers are able to gather transactional level information at the Point of Purchase, and in return provide customized promotions and recommendations at the point of purchase that are tailored to each customer’s buying habits as well as the retailers inventory levels; one example of MSIB in action. Merchants can then use digital channels to send personalized marketing and information with the ability to target likely buyers from their customer base. Positrak is a fast intuitive means of processing sales. Central Administration Server or CAS as we refer to it, is the overall management solution and can be globally controlled and monitored, it provides reporting, customer relationship management, and inventory tracking. Timetrak is a labor management system that helps the retailer make efficient use of the workforce. Go Green offers digital receipts. Best of all, being a cloud application, all software upgrades and enhancements are provided to the retailer at no additional fee.

With its ability to scale resources up and down, as exemplified by the success of the system at Ricky’s NYC and NCAA Final Four (with Event 1), Retail Cloud can effectively provide the systems to achieve MSIB (More Stuff in the Bag) for a wide range of retailers, stadiums, and arenas. Harness the power of the Retail Cloud to manage and grow your business.
